I’ve done the Pollença to Ciutadella crossing about a dozen times now and thought I’d share some notes for anyone planning it.
Distance: About 35nm from Port de Pollença to Ciutadella harbour entrance.
Timing: Leave early morning (0600-0700) to arrive before the afternoon sea breeze fills in. Ciutadella harbour can be tricky with a strong southwesterly blowing straight in.
Watch out for: The ‘rissaga’ phenomenon in Ciutadella — sudden water level changes that can be dramatic. Check local forecasts. Also be aware of the ferry routes between Alcúdia and Ciutadella — big fast ferries come through regularly.
Best conditions: Light to moderate northwesterlies give you a lovely beam reach most of the way.
Alternative: If Ciutadella looks uncomfortable, Cala en Turqueta on the south coast of Menorca is a stunning arrival point, though you’ll need to motor in.
It’s a beautiful crossing with Mallorca’s mountains behind you and Menorca appearing ahead. One of my favourite day sails.
This sounds incredible but also a bit scary for someone at my level. How much experience would you recommend before attempting this crossing? I’ve only really sailed within sight of the Mallorca coast so far.
Great write-up James. I did this crossing a couple of months ago and the rissaga is no joke — the harbour master actually closed the port briefly while I was there. Something to take seriously. The crossing itself was gorgeous though, we had dolphins for the first hour.
Important to add: AIS is really valuable on this crossing. The ferries are fast and they don’t deviate. Keep a proper lookout and have your VHF on channel 16. I always brief charter clients thoroughly before this passage.
@sophie_turner It’s a great passage for building confidence, actually. 35nm in good conditions is very manageable — you’ll always have one island or the other in sight. I’d suggest doing it with an experienced crew member the first time. Maybe one of us could organise a group crossing?
