I’m thinking of doing a 5-day passage from Palma to Sardinia and back in mid-September. Would be a solid 350+ nautical miles, perfect for Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster qualifying miles. The route I’m considering: Palma → Menorca (overnight stop in Mahón) → Sardinia (Alghero or Porto Torres) → then back the same way or via the south of Mallorca depending on the weather.
I can take 2-3 crew on my HR42. You’d need to be comfortable with night sailing and able to do proper watches. No charge for the berth — just split provisioning and marina costs.
Anyone keen? Or has anyone done this route and has advice on the crossing?
James, I did almost exactly this route when I brought my boat over from Sardinia last year. The crossing is about 180nm from Menorca to Sardinia — roughly 30-36 hours depending on conditions. Porto Torres is easier to approach than Alghero, especially at night. September weather is generally good but you can get some lively days. I’d keep an eye on the Mistral forecasts. This sounds amazing! I’d be really interested. I need to build miles for my Coastal Skipper and I’ve never done an overnight passage before. Would that be a problem? I’m a good cook and I don’t get seasick, if that helps!
Great idea. The Menorca stop in Mahón is always worth it — one of the best natural harbours in the Mediterranean. If you time the departure from Menorca right, you can carry a favourable current for the first part of the crossing. Let me know the dates and I might join for the Palma-Menorca leg at least.
