Mile-building trip to Sardinia — looking for crew

I’m planning a mile-building passage from Mallorca to Sardinia in late September / early October. The route would be roughly:

Pollença → Menorca (1 night) → Sardinia (overnight passage, ~180nm) → Costa Smeralda → back via the same route

Total distance approximately 500nm over 10-12 days, depending on weather windows.

This would be suitable for anyone working towards Yachtmaster and needing qualifying miles, including night passages. The boat is my Hallberg-Rassy 42 — well equipped for offshore sailing.

I’m looking for 2-3 crew members who:

  • Have at least Day Skipper or equivalent experience
  • Are comfortable with overnight passages (or want to experience one)
  • Can contribute to watches, cooking, and general seamanship
  • Are available late September

No cost for the passage — just contribute to provisioning and fuel.

This sounds absolutely incredible James! I’d love to come if you’ll have me — I know I’m still relatively new but I’m keen to learn and I promise I’ll pull my weight. I need the miles for my logbook and an overnight passage would be amazing experience.

I could do the Sardinia to Mallorca return leg if you’re short on crew. I know the Sardinian coast well — I could suggest some great stops on the Costa Smeralda and the Maddalena archipelago. Some of the most beautiful sailing in the Med.

We’d both be very interested but September might be tight with Lisa’s work. Can we let you know in a few weeks? This would be an incredible learning opportunity.

I’ll put together a more detailed plan and share it here. We’d do a safety briefing and passage planning session a few days before departure.

This is such a great opportunity for anyone wanting to build miles. James is an excellent and patient skipper — I’d recommend this trip to anyone. The Mallorca-Sardinia crossing is a proper offshore passage and will teach you so much. Wish I could come but I’ll still be running charters in September!
