Marco from Italy — on a two-year sailing sabbatical

Ciao everyone! I’m Marco, 50 years old, and I’m currently on a two-year sailing sabbatical from my work in IT. I sailed from Genova to Sardinia to Menorca and now I’m in Mallorca on my Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.

I’m a bit of a tech geek when it comes to sailing — I’ve upgraded all my navigation electronics, installed an AIS transponder, set up Starlink, and I’m always tinkering with something. Happy to help anyone with electronics questions.

Mallorca has been a wonderful surprise — the sailing is fantastic and the island has so much to offer. Planning to stay at least through the winter before heading south.

Marco, welcome! A Sun Odyssey 45 is a proper bluewater boat. How are you finding the Starlink at sea? I’ve been thinking about it but not sure if it’s worth the investment for someone who mostly stays around the Balearics.

Welcome Marco! If you’re staying through winter, you’ll love it. The island is much quieter and the sailing can be really beautiful — crisp clear days with the mountains covered in snow. Just watch the northerlies in December and January. Let me know if you need any yard recommendations for winter work.
