James here — Yachtmaster and full-time liveaboard

Hello everyone. I’m James, 58, retired from the City about five years ago and haven’t looked back. I did my Yachtmaster Offshore a decade ago and have been pottering around the Med ever since. Currently living aboard my Hallberg-Rassy 42 in Port de Pollença — lovely spot, especially out of season.

I’ve done a fair bit of passage planning and offshore sailing, including a couple of Biscay crossings and a trip down to the Canaries. Happy to share what I’ve learned about weather routing, passage planning, and the joys (and challenges) of living aboard.

Always nice to meet fellow sailors. Cheers.

A Hallberg-Rassy! Dream boat right there. I’d love to hear more about the liveaboard life. I keep fantasising about it but not sure I’m brave enough yet. How do you find Port de Pollença?

James, your experience sounds incredible. We’re seriously considering doing the Yachtmaster at some point down the line. Would you say the jump from Coastal to Yachtmaster is a big one? Any tips for people working towards it?

Port de Pollença is one of my favourite spots on the island. Great choice. If you ever sail down to the south coast, let me know — I can recommend some anchorages that the charter boats don’t usually find.
