Norwegian sailor currently visiting Mallorca and available as crew for training and racing this week.
Owner of an Elan 350 in Norway with extensive offshore and coastal sailing experience. Comfortable with trimming, navigation, helming and watchkeeping. Reliable, easy-going and team-oriented.
My wife and I have recently purchased an apartment in Cala Major, just outside Palma. While we are only here this week, we expect to return from time to time and would like to get to know the local sailing community.
Happy to join both competitive and social sailing in the Palma area.
Welcome to the forum Steinar, and welcome to Mallorca. An Elan 350 owner will fit right in around here.
I am based up in Port de Pollença on a Hallberg-Rassy 42 so a bit north of you, but if you and your wife find yourselves up this way on a future visit I would be happy to take you out for a day sail along the Formentor coast. Stunning stretch of water and a good way to get a feel for the northern end of the island.
For racing connections in Palma you should look into the RCNP — they run regular Wednesday evening races and are generally welcoming to visiting sailors with experience. The club scene here is quite sociable once you are plugged in.
Welcome Steinar! Always good to see another Scandinavian sailor on the island.
An Elan 350 is a lovely boat — we had one in the charter fleet a couple of years back and she was always popular with the more experienced clients. If you are around for a bit longer and fancy some racing, the Club Náutico has Wednesday evening races through October and they are always short of experienced crew. Might be a good way to meet people and get familiar with the bay.
I run charter boats out of Palma so if you ever need local knowledge on anchorages or provisioning spots when you eventually bring a boat down here, just shout.
Thanks, Katrin, and yes, I absolutely love my Elan 350!
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to join the Wednesday sailing yesterday, but I’ll try to make it another time, hopefully later in October.
Could you please let me know where at RCNP the sailors usually meet? I was there last Wednesday around 5:00-5:30 pm, but I couldn’t see any racing or sailing activity, and the guard at the gate wasn’t able to help.
Welcome Steinar. Good to see more Northern European sailors discovering Mallorca — you will find plenty of company here.
For the Wednesday races at RCNP, the crews usually gather on the terrace near the fuel dock around 17:00 to sort out boat assignments. It can be a bit chaotic if you do not know anyone, so I would suggest just walking up and asking which boats need crew. Most skippers are happy to take on experienced hands, especially someone who can trim properly. Tell them you own an Elan 350 and they will know you are not a tourist who just wants to ride along.
With the apartment in Cala Major you are perfectly placed — ten minutes to RCNP, five minutes to STP. Enjoy.
Steinar, if you do make it for one of the Wednesday races let us know how it goes! I have been meaning to try crew racing at RCNP myself but keep chickening out. Feels like everyone there has been sailing since before I was born.
Steinar, welcome! I am also relatively new here — moved from Germany over the summer. Sophie is right about the Wednesday races, I have been curious about those too but definitely not brave enough yet. Maybe once I can actually tack without panicking.
