Tramuntana wind forecast — who else is watching this weekend?

The forecast for this weekend is showing a strong Tramuntana building from Friday night. AEMET is saying north/northwest F6-7, gusting 8 in the channel between Mallorca and Menorca.

I’m in Alcúdia and planning to double up my mooring lines. Anyone else on the north coast preparing?

For those new to Mallorca, the Tramuntana is the dominant northerly wind that funnels down through the Tramuntana mountains. It can be very gusty, especially in the bays on the north coast. It typically brings clear skies but cold air and rough seas.

I’ll post updates from Alcúdia through the weekend if that’s useful.

I’m in Pollença and yes, I’ve been watching it. This looks like a proper blow. I’ve already added extra fenders and doubled my lines. The good news is it should blow through by Monday. The Tramuntana rarely lasts more than 3-4 days at this time of year.

I’ve seen 50+ knot gusts in this bay — the mountains funnel and accelerate the wind dramatically. Not to be underestimated.

I’ve cancelled my charter this weekend because of it. Not worth the risk. The north coast in a Tramuntana is no place for a charter boat. I’ll do a gear maintenance day instead — always a list of jobs to get through.

This is really helpful — I’m still learning about the local weather patterns. Is there a particular website or app you all use for Mallorca-specific forecasts? I’ve been using Windy but wondering if there’s something better for the Balearics.

Thanks for the heads up Marco. I’m in Palma so we’re somewhat sheltered but I’ll still check my lines tonight. The Tramuntana can wrap around and cause a nasty swell even in the Bay of Palma if it’s sustained.

For anyone in the north: make sure your anchor is well set if you’re on a mooring buoy. The gusts in Pollença Bay can be ferocious.

@sophie_turner I use a combination: AEMET (Spanish met office) for the official coastal forecast, Windy for the visual models, and PredictWind for passage planning. AEMET is the one to trust for official warnings. Windy is great for seeing the wind patterns visually but can be optimistic sometimes.
